The day before leaving Bolivia, we decided to have a family outing. We traveled by taxi with Gerson's family to Porongo, a town about an hour outside of Santa Cruz. We learned while we were there that it is one of the main towns that produces the fruit achaichairu. When we learned this, we wanted to buy some to take back home with us. It's one of our favorite fruits and we were thrilled it was in season during the time we were there.
While we were at the marketplace wondering how we could find the fruit to buy, this man came up to us and said he had lots of achaichairu trees in his yard and he would sell us 50 achaichairu for 15 Bolivianos, which is about $2.00. We were excited and Silvana left with him to harvest the fruit while we finished our snack in the market. The achaichairu he had already harvested is in the basket at his feet. They are small fruit with a yellow-orange peel that you don't eat.
We joined them at the man's house a little bit later. Jayden tried his first achaichairu! He loved it! As you can see, the inside is a white meaty substance. They also contain a few black seeds that you have to spit out.
We tried them out as they were being harvested. YUM! They were the biggest, sweetest achaichairu I have ever eaten!
We ended up buying 150 achaichairu to take home with us. They were picked out with care! So, we ended up paying about $6.00 for a BUNCH of our favorite fruit! What a deal!
We picked up our achaichairu and hit the road to return to Santa Cruz. In the background you can see the taxi we traveled in. It was a wonderful outing and we made lots of memories with our family. What a way to end our trip! And, yes, we made quite a dent in the achaichairu in the 24 hours we had left in Bolivia! :)
