The BIG Game!

THE FINALS! As atheletic director, Gerson was not only going to be playing in one of the games, but he had to prepare the soccer field, buy the trophies and medals, hire the referee, put the speakers up, and arrange for someone to annouce the game. He had a LOT of work to do before it was ever time to play!
There were actually two games. The first game was played to determine 3rd and 4th place. The ref in the above picture has worked with Gerson a lot. He also has worked as a ref for several major league games here in Santa Cruz.

During the first game, Gerson had another problem to deal with! COWS decided they also wanted to play soccer and be a part of the final games! They entered the field on one end, and walked/jogged to the other end. The game came to a stand-still until the ref and the players could convince the cows that they didn't belong! Never a dull moment . . .

Meanwhile, Gerson ran the stats table, also known as the prize table. As he watched the first game, he admired the first place trophy, dreaming of helping his team win it. Was it to be?

When the first game finished, Gerson's team, Theology, huddled up for some stategic planning, pep talks, and prayer. In the first half, they played super well and were winning 1-0 going into the second half.

HOWEVER, in the end, their rivals (Biochemistry), made a mighty comeback and won by one point. The final score was 1-2. But, second place isn't too shabby! They were proud of the way they played. There's always NEXT semester! (Gerson wanted me to make sure I mentioned that in this picture he is giving our baby a love pat!)

Birthday in Bolivia!

Last Saturday morning, before the FINAL soccer game in which Gerson played, we went to his parents house to celebrate a birthday. His sister, Silvana, turned 27! We had an early lunch so that Gerson would have time to digest his food before he had to run around the soccer field.

Dad cooked meat on the grill; Mom made a salad, fried yucca, and cheese rice. It was scrumptious, as usual!
In Bolivia, the custom is that the birthday ¨person¨ has to bite into the cake. Everyone stands around chanting, ¨Bite it! Bite it!¨ Another person holds it up to the, in this case, birthday GIRL and then someone puts their hand behind her head. When she leans down to BITE, the person shoves her head into the cake!

Okay, so for us Americans, we are grossed out by the GERM issue! I mean, the birthday person´s mouth and nose usually go right into the cake! However, it IS a funny sight when the birthday gal pulls her head out of the cake and it is covered in icing! By the way, for all of you concerned by the germ issue, let´s just say the birthday girl gets the BIGGEST piece of cake -- the part her faced touched -- at least, USUALLY!

Retreating!

Hi to all the faithful who look at our blog!

I have lots of new pictures to share with you because it has been a busy week. However, also due to the fact that it HAS been a busy week, I've not had time to post them.

I wanted to write a quick note to let you know that Gerson and I are "retreating" this weekend with all the WGM Bolivia staff. We will be gone from tomorrow AM (Monday) to Friday PM. Since I don't have a laptop, and I'm not even sure the place where we are going has WI-FI, I will not be able to post all the fabulous pictures until next weekend. Please be patient!! We plan to take a lot more pictures and have more fodder for our blog.

Please pray for us this week. The week of retreat for missionaries is something we all look forward to. Personally speaking, Gerson and I are very tired and in desperate need of rest and renewal. We will be having 2-3 sessions daily with a pastor who has come from Indiana to share with us. This is not only a time of physical rest, but also of spiritual challenge and renewal. Please pray that God will meet us where we are and that we will be receptive to hear His voice! As people in full-time ministry, it's important we have time to get away and reflect on the One who has called us and allow Him to shape and mold us, while at the same time renew us.

We look forward to sharing all about it with YOU when we return! May you, also, have a chance this week to spend special time with the One who cherishes YOU.
